The latest episode of The Next Big Idea spotlights Guimarães, a city that has been steadily consolidating a strategic position in national innovation, with a clear focus on high value-added sectors such as biotechnology and medtech, the aerospace sector, and the defense industry.
Avepark – the Science and Technology Park – plays a central role in this strategy, bringing together tech companies, research centers, and startups working closely with the University of Minho. Among the featured cases, Stemmatters – a company specializing in the development of therapies and biotechnological products – represents the biotechnology and health pillar; Fibrenamics, with projects in advanced materials applicable to the aerospace and security sectors, is leading the development of a technological defense hub based at Avepark.
With more than 140 supported startups and around 20 million euros in attracted investment, the municipality’s incubator network, Set.Up Guimarães, plays an active role in this dynamic ecosystem, supporting the growth of companies operating in the region’s innovation priority areas. In this way, Guimarães continues to strengthen its position as a forward-looking territory, where technology and local talent are harnessed to tackle global challenges.
