The president of the Institute for Research in Biomaterials, Biodegradables and Biomimetics (I3Bs) at the University of Minho, Rui L. Reis, has been recognized as the scientist with the most highly cited publications in Portugal, according to the international “Best Scientific Rankings 2025” by the specialized portal Research.com.
With 1,670 scientific publications, nearly 90,000 citations, and a remarkable D-index of 145, Rui L. Reis is established as a global reference in the fields of biomaterials, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. This recognition marks yet another milestone in the researcher’s career, who has received numerous awards and held international positions, carrying out his work at Avepark in Guimarães, where the 3B’s Research Institute is based – a center of excellence at the University of Minho and a member entity of Guimarães Marca.
This distinction not only represents a significant individual achievement for Rui L. Reis but also a source of pride for the Municipality of Guimarães, which has long invested in valuing science and innovation as strategic pillars for its economic and territorial development. The work developed by Rui L. Reis and the 3B’s Group team projects the scientific capacity installed in Guimarães on an international scale, placing the municipality at the forefront of research applied to health and future materials.
The evaluation by Research.com used the OpenAlex and CrossRef platforms to analyze the scientific impact of more than 165,000 researchers worldwide, highlighting Rui L. Reis as the highest-ranked name in science produced in Portugal.
