The Secretary of State for the Environment, Hugo Pires, visited Guimarães this week to learn about some innovative research projects produced by Fibrenamics, focusing on sustainability and circular economy. The government official also visited the facilities and laboratories of CVR – Center for Waste Valorization.
Emphasizing the need for climate transition and behavior change, the Secretary of State acknowledged that “Portugal is still lagging behind its targets,” disposing of about 56% of the produced waste in landfills. By 2035, the goal, as stated by the Secretary of State, is to reduce this to 10%.
Hugo Pires, therefore, considered that “this reuse of materials and recovery of resources is absolutely essential. Science can greatly help us create new resources from these waste materials that we can apply in various sectors of our economy,” he concluded.
