The Fibrenamics Institute is changing the way we view industrial waste. In an interview with Expresso, the Fibrenamics Green initiative aims to transform textile and mineral waste into high-value fibers, promoting sustainability and the circular economy.
Raul Fangueiro, President of Fibrenamics – Institute for Innovation in Fiber and Composite Materials, explained to the newspaper that the project combines three key pillars: technology, design, and market. “Fibrenamics Green has created a strong connection between the vertices of this triangle, forming value chains for each type of waste, meaning those who produce the waste, those who have it, those who can valorize it, those who can transform it into a product, and those who can bring it to the market,” said Raul Fangueiro. The goal is to transform what was once considered waste into new raw materials that can be used in products as diverse as clothing and construction materials.
The project, which involved over 100 companies and received approximately 553,000 euros in funding through the Norte 2020 program and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), aims not only to innovate in recycling but also to create new solutions that can succeed in the market.
Fibrenamics Green goes beyond simple waste reuse by creating a value chain tailored to each type of waste, showing that innovation can come from what once seemed useless.
